Everyone knows that laughter is contagious. But when someone tries to suppress a smile, it can also be quite funny. When someone tries to hold back a smile by making a face, frowning, or covering their mouth with their hands, it looks even more interesting. This is proven by a popular show called “Last One Laughing”, which has now spread all over the world.
This show first started in Japan, under the name “Documentary”. The idea is very simple – ten comedians will be together, and their job will be to try to make each other laugh, but not laugh themselves. This format is actually very old because there is also a popular challenge on YouTube called “Try Not to Laugh”, where the main objective is to not laugh at something funny. But when it was brought to television as a competition, it created a stir all over the world.
“Last One Laughing” has been launched in Italy, Mexico, Spain, France, Canada, Denmark, Colombia, and most recently in Ireland, where it was presented by Graham Norton. The show has been a huge success in almost every country. It is a lot like “The Traitors” or “Big Brother”, which uses a similar entertaining format. So the producers’ job is just to present it well.
When “Last One Laughing” started in the UK, it was pretty well run. Its first season featured Bob Mortimer, Daisy May Cooper, Joe Lycett, Judi Love, Rob Beckett, Sara Pascoe, Lou Sanders, Joe Wilkinson, Harriet Kemsley, and Richard Ayoade. The show is hosted by Jimmy Carr. Looking at this cast, it is clear that there is someone here who can make the audience laugh.

To keep the show entertaining, some innovations have been introduced. There is a “Joker” opportunity for contestants to perform stand-up comedy for five minutes. There is also a “Notice Step”, where one contestant can whisper something vulgar into the other’s ear, making it even harder to stop laughing. There are also some surprise guest appearances, which make the whole show even more interesting.
“Last One Laughing” takes inspiration from various shows. There is a diary room similar to “Big Brother”, where contestants share their experiences. There are some scenes similar to “Gogglebox”, where contestants watch each other’s performances. And like “Taskmaster”, here comedians are involved in various funny activities, which makes them even funnier.
But one question that may arise while watching “Last One Laughing” is – are there really that many funny comedians in Britain? The first season had some popular and skilled actors, but if it continues for a long time, will future seasons be as entertaining as the next? Because will Britain’s 93rd funniest man be as engaging as the top comedians? Although that’s a matter of the future, the show has been a huge hit with viewers so far.
It’s basically a television version of an old game. We’ve all played games as children, where we tried to make our friends laugh but were eliminated if we laughed ourselves. While games like this have changed over time, people’s interest has not waned. So the “Last One Laughing” show is working as an effective and funny entertainment. It may not be new, but it’s presented in a great way to entertain the audience.
