The Bangladesh national football team’s midfield is set to get even stronger this time. Canada-based midfielder Shamit Shome is set to make his debut for the Bangladesh team in the Asian Cup qualifier against Singapore on June 10. The 26-year-old footballer, whose parents’ home is in the Sreemangal area of โโMoulvibazar, has had a deep attachment to the country since childhood.
Shamit knew how to speak Bengali from a young age and was familiar with the culture, food, and social values โโof Bangladesh from his family. It is from this passion that he decided to represent the country. Following the path of Jamal Bhuyan and Hamza Chowdhury, Shamit is now going to be another international footballer who has embraced his roots.
The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) first contacted Shamit last year, during the preparations for the match against India. Then, after discussing with the new president, Tabith Awal, he decided to play for Bangladesh.
“Everyone looks like me, same culture, same languageโit’s a different feeling. I’ve never had that in Canada.”
He added that he has already discussed the strategy for the match against Singapore with the national team coach. He will play in defensive or attacking midfieldโwhichever the team needs. He describes himself as flexible in both positions.
The love of the fans has also motivated him. “There are no such passionate football fans in Canada. Everyone is welcoming me on social media, which played a big role in my decision.”
His family is equally proud. “My parents, even grandparents, are very happy. Although they are not able to come from Canada, relatives from Srimangal will be present at the field.”
Reminiscing about his childhood, Shamit said, “There was a pond in front of our house, and we used to play cricket and football near the trees in the back. Srimangal has a special place in my heart.”
His football journey began when he was just four or five years old. He joined club football at the age of eight or ten and made his professional league debut at the age of 18. He is currently a key player for Calgary, Canada.
He is inspired by watching world-renowned midfielders like Luka Modric, Toni Kroos, and Cesc Fabregas play. At the same time, he is ready to play his role for Bangladesh as seriously as possible.
His goal for the Bangladesh national team is also clear: to perform well in the Asian Cup qualifiers and secure a place in the next round.
Although he plans to return to Canada immediately after the match, he has expressed his hope to meet his relatives in Srimangal.
Shamit Shome’s debut in the Bangladesh national team is considered to be the beginning of a new chapter in the love for the country, not just for a player, but also for the hearts of the expatriates.
