West Bengal Election 2026: 5 Key Reasons Behind BJP’s Massive Surge and TMC’s Setback

The 2026 assembly elections are signaling a major change in West Bengal politics. According to various local sources, the All India Trinamool Congress, which has been in power for more than a decade, is facing a major setback this time. On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party is moving towards forming the government for the first time.

According to initial information, the BJP is winning about 206 seats, which is much more than the majority (148) required to form the government. On the other hand, the number of seats for the Trinamool Congress is coming down to about 81. Other parties are getting a handful of seats combined.

This result is not just an electoral change; rather, it indicates a major change in the long-standing political equation of West Bengal. Experts say that there are several important reasons behind this victory.

First, the women’s vote has played a major role in favor of the BJP. The Women’s Reservation Bill and women-centric campaign of the National Democratic Alliance government at the Center have had a positive impact on women voters. According to the BJP’s internal calculations, the women’s vote has increased by at least 5 percent. Since the number of women and men voters in West Bengal is almost equal, this change has had a major impact on the results.

Secondly, the BJP has been able to exploit the pent-up discontent among government employees and job seekers. The promise of implementing the Seventh Pay Commission and filling vacancies has attracted millions of voters. This issue has become an important factor in the election, especially in West Bengal, where the number of government employees is comparatively high.

Thirdly, the promotion of development and central projects has been one of the major strategies of the BJP. The message of development, infrastructure, and the ‘double engine’ government led by Narendra Modi has attracted the middle class and young voters. A special campaign was carried out targeting a large number of voters in the age group of 20 to 29 and new voters who voted for the first time, which analysts believe has been effective.

Fourthly, the issue of law and order and security has had a major impact on the election. The deployment of central forces in the state and allegations of political violence have created a sense of security among the general voters. The issue of deteriorating law and order has repeatedly come up in the campaigns of Amit Shah and Narendra Modi, which has played a role in shaping public opinion against the ruling government.

Fifth, the revision of the voter list and the so-called ‘external’ issue have gone in the BJP’s favour. The party claims that lakhs of fake names have been removed from the voter list, which has made the elections more transparent. This message is also believed to have had an impact on the voters.

All in all, this election in West Bengal is not just a change of power, but a reflection of a major shift in voter sentiment. The BJP is moving towards a historic result by leveraging its organisation, strategy, and national leadership, while a new political challenge has been created for the Trinamool Congress.

Only after the final results of this election are declared will it be clear how permanent this change is and what its long-term impact on West Bengal politics will be.
