After more than four decades in hiding, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) has arrested Major (retd) Mozaffar Hossain, one of the fugitive accused in the assassination case of former President Ziaur Rahman. After the arrest, he was handed over to representatives of the Bangladesh Army.
This information was given in a press release sent by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media and Public Relations Division on Thursday (July 17).
According to DMP information, 77-year-old Major (retd) Mozaffar Hossain had been in hiding since the assassination of former President Ziaur Rahman in 1981. Recently, with the help of secret information and modern information technology, the DB police were able to identify his location.
Then, under the direction of DB Additional Police Commissioner Md. Shafiqul Islam, a raid was conducted at a house in Banani in the capital at 10:10 pm on Wednesday (July 16). Major (retd) Mozaffar Hossain was arrested in the raid.
Police said that after the arrest, his identity was confirmed during the initial interrogation. After which the matter was immediately informed to the Armed Forces Division.
Later, he was formally handed over to a delegation of the Military Police at Dhaka Cantonment at 6:10 pm on Thursday.
It is worth noting that the then President Ziaur Rahman was killed during a military coup at the Chittagong Circuit House on May 30, 1981. Several military officers were tried in the case filed in connection with this murder. However, some of them were absconding for a long time.
The arrest of Major (Retd.) Muzaffar Hossain is being seen as an important development in this long-standing case. Now, further steps will be taken against him according to the legal process.
