Despite a ceasefire between Iran and the United States, Israel has carried out deadly airstrikes on several locations, including the Lebanese capital Beirut. These attacks have caused extensive damage and many civilian casualties. With the mediation of Pakistan, a two-week ceasefire between Iran and the United States came into effect, which was announced to apply to Lebanon and other theaters of war. However, Israel refused to include Lebanon in the ceasefire.
Israel said it had attacked 100 Hezbollah installations in Lebanon within 10 minutes, including Beirut, the Bekaa Valley and southern Lebanon. Most of these installations were in civilian areas. However, Israel claimed that it had taken steps to minimize the harm to innocent people.
Lebanese Health Minister Rakan Nasreddine said that the attacks were causing hospitals to be overwhelmed with wounded and martyrs and hundreds of people had been killed. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has accused Israel of killing “defenseless civilians” and ignoring regional and international efforts to end the war. He has appealed to the international community for help to stop the aggression.
The situation challenges the ceasefire and international human rights law, posing a major test for the international community.
