Is Anees Bazmeeā€™s Latest Comedy-Horror Lacking the Spark A Diwali Release Review

Bollywood has another comedy-horror movie directed by Anees Bazmee this Diwali. The director though promised that the film would have lots of laugh turns and comedy elements, but in reality, nothing much is seen. After the success of the previous installments, this new installment seems to have been made in haste, which did not bring the movie to life at all. The last movie was released after the Corona pandemic when the audience lacked entertainment. But this time the film was released after Stree 2, which was full of laughs from beginning to end. As a result, the long 158-minute screenplay of this movie becomes monotonous at times.

The movie depicts some Bengali culture and issues in a somewhat humorous twist, which may be amusing to some viewers but may become a little disturbing to many. The lack of logical flow and proper direction in the story has largely diluted the complexity of the plot. Though at one place the director compares the horrors of poverty as scarier than ghosts, a few such scenes were not enough to build a whole and powerful screenplay. In casting, the lifeblood of this franchise is Karthik Aryan, who once again becomes the lifeblood of the film with his innate comedy skills. While there is some depth to bring in the characters, the lack of dialogues and situations deprives the movie of making it more interesting.

Though this movie stars Vidya Balan as Manjulika and Madhuri Dixit in important roles, they did not get enough screen time and proper script to reveal their full talent. Although Madhuri is seen in a different role here, her character doesn’t reach much depth under the director’s vague direction. On the other hand, although the character of Vidya Balan’s first film is back, the quality of the story seems to have gone down a bit.

While Tripti Dimri was added as another new face to the franchise, her presence was limited to songs and some promotional segments. His character doesn’t have much depth or acting scope. Ultimately, this film might lose relevance among the big star power movies, such as Diwali, as the quality of writing or script here is very low.
