Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated days after 26 people were killed in an attack on tourists in Kashmir’s Pahalgam. According to the Indian government, they launched missile strikes on a total of 9 locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir in the early hours of Wednesday night. India has named this military operation ‘Operation Sindoor’.
India said that the attack was mainly aimed at terrorist camps, from where attacks on Indian territory were being planned. They claimed that no military installations were targeted. On the other hand, Pakistan said that a total of 8 people, including two children, were killed in the attack and that the attacks were carried out in at least three important areas, including Kotli and Muzaffarabad.
The Pakistani army said in a statement, “This attack by India is cowardly. We will give a befitting reply in due course.” They also said that fighter jets are patrolling Pakistani skies, and all preparations have been made to counter them.
At the same time, the Indian Army reported on its X (formerly Twitter) handle that Pakistani artillery shells were fired in the Bhimber Pass in the Poonch-Rajouri sector. Pakistan even claimed to have shot down two Indian fighter jets and a drone.
The tension began after the horrific attack on April 22, in which 26 people were killed in an attack on innocent tourists in Pahalgam. India has been blaming Pakistan-backed terrorist organizations for the attack.
According to the latest reports, loud explosions are being heard from areas adjacent to the Line of Control in Kashmir, and panic is prevailing among local residents. The armies of the two countries are on high alert along the border. Electricity has been cut off in border villages, and many families are already running in search of safe shelter.
Currently, relations between the two nuclear-armed countries of South Asia are in a precarious state. The international community, including the United Nations, has called on both sides to show restraint in this situation. Experts say that if this tension escalates further, it could have dire consequences for the entire region.
The recent clash on the Indo-Pak border poses a grave threat not only to the diplomatic relations between the two countries but also to the lives, security, and future of innocent civilians. It is time for both sides to take a responsible stand, so that a peaceful resolution, not another war, becomes the priority.
