A horrific accident occurred during a crucial La Liga match in Barcelona, โโSpain. A car lost control and crashed into a crowd outside the Espanyol stadium on Thursday, where Barcelona vs. Espanyol was being played. At least 13 people were injured, Barcelona police said.
Catalan authorities have classified the incident as an accident and have confirmed that it was not a deliberate attack.
The accident occurred at the start of the match. However, the police department confirmed that there was no danger to the fans inside the stadium. The match ultimately ended in a victory for Barcelona, โโโโwhich confirmed the team’s La Liga title.
Seven of the injured in the accident were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. The remaining six were treated at the scene.
The 34-year-old female driver was arrested after the incident. However, police said that no drugs or alcohol were found in the driver’s system. The matter is still under investigation.
“Everyone suffered minor injuries, and it was not a terrorist attack, it was just an accident,” said Catalonia’s regional president, Salvador Illa.
Meanwhile, Barcelona police said in a message on their official X (formerly Twitter) account that “there is no security threat to the spectators inside the RCDE stadium as a result of this incident.”
The incident occurred during a high-stakes La Liga match between Barcelona and Espanyol, on which the title depended. The local administration said the safety of the spectators and the situation in the area surrounding the stadium are now under control.
Police sources said that security at the stadium will be further strengthened to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.
