Iran’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been revived. Tensions with the United States and Israel have cast uncertainty over the team’s participation in the tournament. Iran was scheduled to play two group matches in Los Angeles and one in Seattle. However, FIFA rejected their offer to move the matches to Mexico due to security concerns.
In the midst of this situation, US special envoy Paolo Zampoli made an unexpected proposal. He said that if Iran were to be eliminated from the World Cup, four-time world champions Italy could be taken in their place. According to him, Italy’s history and footballing prowess support such inclusion.
However, Italy made its position clear after this proposal. The country’s Sports Minister, Andrea Abodi, said that the idea of participating in the World Cup instead of Iran was completely unacceptable to them. He stressed that participation in the World Cup is determined entirely on merit and must be achieved through on-field performance. According to him, such a proposal is not only unreasonable but also goes against the basic principles of football.
It should be noted that Italy recently failed to qualify for the World Cup after losing to Bosnia and Herzegovina in the play-offs. As a result, they could not qualify for the tournament according to the rules. FIFA rules are also clear – if a team leaves, certain qualifications and rankings are considered when taking another team in its place, and no team can be included at will.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has already said that Iran will be in the 2026 World Cup. However, if for some reason they cannot participate in the end, then the highest-ranked team in the same region may be considered as an alternative. In this case, the United Arab Emirates is being discussed as a possible name.
The whole incident once again reminds us that in a major event like the World Cup, it is not political influence or external pressure, but talent and performance that are most important. Even a strong team like Italy is not exempt from this rule, which highlights the transparency and fairness of international football.
Only time will tell whether Iran will play in the World Cup under the current circumstances, but the proposal to replace them with Italy has created more controversy than reality.
