Former FBI Director James Comey has sparked fresh controversy in the United States. Comey recently posted on Instagram, in which he wrote the number โ8647โ with a sailboat on the beach. Republican leaders who saw the post alleged that it was actually a hint of inciting violence against former President Donald Trump.
The number โ86โ is used as American slang for โcancelโ or โdeleteโ. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it is also sometimes used to mean โkillโ. And โ47โ is President Trumpโs numerical identity, as he is the 47th president of the United States.
Comey wrote in the caption of this post: โWalking on the beach, I saw a beautiful shell formation.โ The post was controversial for some time and was quickly deleted. He later said, โI donโt understand how anyone could associate violence with these numbers. I am against all forms of violence, so I deleted the post.โ
The US Secret Service has launched an investigation into the post. โWe take any potential threat to our protected people seriously,โ said spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. โWe have seen the former FBI directorโs post and are taking it seriously.โ
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem called it a direct call to attack Trump. She wrote on X-A (formerly Twitter), โShameful former FBI director calls for Trump to be assassinated.โ
Current FBI Director Kash Patel said, โWe are in contact with the Secret Service. While the Secret Service has the primary responsibility for investigating such threats, we will cooperate fully.โ
White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino called Comeyโs post โa terrorist signal.โ Donald Trump Jr. also said, โComey actually called for my father to be assassinated.โ
James Comey served as FBI director from 2013 to 2017. He was in charge of several controversial cases, including the Hillary Clinton email investigation. Trump later fired him during the investigation into Russian election interference.
